Freelance contract template
A freelance contract sets out the terms on which a business engages a self-employed freelancer for a project: the services, the fee, who owns the finished work and how either side can end it. It is a contract for services, not employment, so it deals with substitution, tax and status. A business uses one each time it takes on a freelancer, with the brief and fee changing each time.

Questions people ask
What is a freelance contract?
A written agreement between a business and a self-employed freelancer for a project or piece of work. It sets out the work, the fee, who owns the result and how it can end.
What should a freelance contract include?
The services and deliverables, dates, fee and payment terms, ownership of the work, confidentiality, insurance, liability and how either side can end the contract.
Does the freelancer or the client own the work?
The contract offers two options: the work is assigned to the client once the freelancer has been paid, or the client takes a licence on stated terms.
What is IR35 and does it matter here?
IR35 is the name for the off-payroll working rules, which can apply when a freelancer works through their own company. The contract has a tax and status clause, and an extra clause for engagements the client has decided are inside the rules.
Can a freelancer send someone else to do the work?
That is your choice. The contract either allows a suitably skilled substitute or requires the freelancer to do the work personally.
