Gift Aid declaration template

A Gift Aid declaration is the form a donor signs so a charity can reclaim tax on their gifts. This version is based on HMRC's multiple-donation model: the donor ticks a box to Gift Aid the current donation and any they make in future or have made in the past four years, confirms they are a UK taxpayer, gives their name and home address, and is told how to cancel or report changes. A charity completes one for each donor, with the charity, donation amount and donor details changing every time.

Questions people ask

What is a Gift Aid declaration?

It is a statement from a donor, who must be a UK taxpayer, that they want a charity to treat their gifts as Gift Aid donations. It lets the charity claim tax relief from HMRC on those gifts, currently 25p for every £1 given at the basic rate.

Does one declaration cover every donation?

This version does. It covers the donation named on it, any the donor makes in future and any made in the previous four years, until they cancel it. HMRC also has a separate single-donation model.

What does the donor need to understand before signing?

They must pay at least as much Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax as the Gift Aid claimed on their gifts across the tax year, or they are responsible for paying the difference. The form says so, and asks them to tell the charity if their circumstances change.

Can higher-rate taxpayers claim anything?

Higher and additional-rate taxpayers can ask for extra relief themselves, through their Self Assessment tax return or by asking HMRC to adjust their tax code. The form points this out.
