Image licence agreement template

An image licence agreement lets a photographer or illustrator give a business permission to use named images, for a stated use, in a stated place and for a stated time, while keeping ownership of them. A licensor completes one for each client or job, with the images, fees, exclusivity and credit changing each time.

Questions people ask

What is an image licence?

It is permission to use an image in ways the owner agrees, without the user owning the image. The licence says which images, what use, where and for how long.

What is the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive?

With a non-exclusive licence the owner can license the same image to others. With an exclusive licence they agree not to, for the scope stated in the agreement.

Do I need to credit the photographer?

Only if the agreement says so. The template has a choice between a credit in set wording and no credit.

What about people or places in the picture?

Clause 5 records whether the images have model or property releases for the permitted use, so the licensee knows whether they are covered.

Can one agreement cover several images?

Yes. The images table has a row for each image, with its own use and fee.
