Work experience agreement template

A work experience agreement sets out what a student, their education provider and the host employer expect from a placement. This version is based on the Department for Education's T Level industry placement agreement: the parties, dates, hours and address, communication, dress code, pay and expenses, a role profile, the student's responsibilities and conduct, and signatures. A new one is made for each placement, with the people, dates, role and learning goals changing every time.

The rules it usually needs

Written in plain English when the template is set up.

  • Only when…

“Include the parent or carer as a party and a signature line only if the student has a parent or carer who is a party to the agreement.”

When the student is under 18 and a parent is a party, their name and signature line are added; for an adult student they are left out.

  • Once for each item

“The typical activities, employability skills and technical skills each repeat once for every item listed.”

When the employer lists five typical activities, the role profile shows five bullet lines.

  • One of several wordings

“The payment section records whether the student is paid and whether travel expenses are reimbursed, with amounts.”

When the placement is unpaid but travel is covered, it states that and gives the daily limit.

Questions people ask

What is a work experience agreement for?

It records what the student, the education provider and the employer have agreed about a placement, including hours, supervision, conduct and review, so everyone knows what is expected.

Is this only for T Level placements?

It is based on the Department for Education's T Level industry placement agreement, so the wording refers to that guidance. Other work experience arrangements may need it adjusted.

Does the student have to be paid?

That depends on the arrangement and the student's circumstances. The agreement records whether pay is given and whether travel costs are reimbursed. If you are unsure about pay obligations, check government guidance or take advice.

Who signs it?

The student signs, a parent or carer signs where one is a party, and authorised people sign for the education provider and the employer.
