Questions people ask

What is a workmanship guarantee?

A promise by the contractor to put right defects in its work, and in the materials it supplied, that appear during the guarantee period.

How long should a workmanship guarantee last?

There is no set period. One, five and ten years are common, depending on the type of work.

Does a guarantee replace my legal rights?

No. It is in addition to a consumer's legal rights, which include having work done with reasonable care and skill.

What does a guarantee not cover?

Usually accidental damage, misuse, fair wear and tear, work by others and events outside the contractor's control. The guarantee lists its exclusions.

What does insurance backing add?

If the contractor has stopped trading, the customer can claim directly from the insurer for the rest of the period, on the policy's terms.
